History
The museum was founded in 1912 after Howard Pyle's death as the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, with paintings purchased from Pyle's widow. Samuel Bancroft's Pre-Raphaelite art collection was acquired in 1938, and the present museum was built on Kentmere Parkway. At the same time the name was changed to Delaware Art Center. In 1972, after accreditation by American Association of Museums, the name was changed to Delaware Art Museum.[3]
