Old Immigrants

Old Immigrants

The term Old Immigrant refers to someone who came to the United States from Northern or Western Europe (i.e. Britain, France, Germany, Ireland or Scandinavia) during the first wave of immigration following American independence. It is usually considered to have ended in 1890. During the mid 19th century, large numbers of left Ireland because of the Irish Potato Famine, whilst many Germans fled from their small, oppressive feudal monarchies after the revolutions of 1848 failed.

Old Immigrants were attracted to America because of the availability of free land, plus the promise of personal or religious freedom.
