Yadgir (Kannada: ಯಾದಗಿರಿ) is a town in Gulbarga District in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is also the headquarters of the Yadgir Taluk

Geography

The town is spread over an area of 5.6 sq. km. Yadgir is well connected by road and railways. Bhima rivers flows through Yadgir town.

Yadgir Taluk borders the following Taluks of Gulbarga district: Sedam taluk to the north, Chitapur taluk to the north-west and Shahpur Taluk to the west. It also borders Makhtal taluk of Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh to the east.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Yadgir had a population of 58,802. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Yadgir has an average literacy rate of 56%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 65%, and female literacy is 48%. In Yadgir, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Nearly 30 percent of the population is Muslim.

History

The town is grown around the hill of forts. Long ago it was ruled by Yadava Dynasty so the town was named "Yadagiri".
