- Lapphyttan
Lapphyttan in Norberg,
Sweden , may be regarded as thetype site for theMedieval Blast Furnace . Its date is probably between1150 and1350 . It producedcast iron , which was then fined to make balls of iron known as osmonds. Osmonds occur in English Customs records in the1250s and seem to be alluded to in a commercial treaty withNovgorod in1203 . Furnaces of this type have also been identified in Mark (Märkische Sauerland) in Westphalia and north of theSchwäbische Alb both inGermany .Further reading
