Sweetwater River (California)

The Sweetwater River is a river in southern San Diego County, California. The river's headwaters are in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The river flows roughly southwest for about convert|55|mi|km and empties into the middle of San Diego Bay. There are two reservoirs on the Sweetwater River. Loveland Lake, about 5 miles (8 km) south of the city of Alpine is the first. Loveland Dam was completed in 1945 and the lake can hold 25,400 acre-feet (31,000,000 m³) of water. The second is Sweetwater Reservoir, about convert|9|mi|km southeast of the city of San Diego. The 28,100 acre-foot (35,000,000 m³) reservoir is formed by Sweetwater Dam, completed in 1888. The river's watershed includes about convert|200|sqmi|km2, stretching from Cleveland National Forest to San Diego Bay.
