WBGH-CA began broadcasting on
September 10 ,1995 . Its signal was located on VHF channel 8 and had the callsign W08DL. The station's sign-on occurred after the market's long time NBC affiliateWICZ became a Fox affiliate. That switch happened as a result of "The Big Switch of 1994-1997". W08DL was initially a partial semi-satellite of Elmira's NBC affiliateWETM-TV which was owned by Smith Broadcasting. In1997 , W08DL changed its callsign to WBGH-LP. Eventually, the station largely separated from the WETM partial simulcast with the exception of airing that station's newscasts. In
1998 , WBGH-LP moved to UHF channel 20 to make way for WICZ's digital signal on channel 8. In2000 , Smith Broadcasting sold WBGH-LP and WETM (along with Watertown's ABC affiliateWWTI ) to theAckerley Group ofSeattle . With this sale, WBGH's last ties with WETM were severed since Ackerley already owned WIVT at the time and that station began controlling WBGH when the deal closed. Shortly after Ackerley assumed control of WBGH, it was upgraded to Class A status and changed its calls to the present-day WBGH-CA. Ackerley was bought out byClear Channel Communications in2002 .On
April 20 ,2007 , Clear Channel entered into an agreement to sell its entire television stations group toProvidence Equity Partners with the group deal closing onMarch 14 ,2008 . WBGH is licensed by theFCC as a low-power, Class A analog station and does not provide digital off-the-air transmissions of its own. As it operates as part of the WIVTtwinstick , it is possible that that station's digital transmitter could be used to carry WBGH on anATSC subchannel. The official plan is to broadcast WBGH-CA in high definition in the future with the FCC's digital rollout plan for low power stations. Currently,Time Warner Cable carries a high definition signal of WBGH on digital channel 700. WIVT's weeknight newscasts at 5:30 and 6 as well as the short 11 o'clock update are simulcasted on WBGH.External links
