Knoxville National Cemetery was established by Major General
Ambrose Burnside , and designed by E.B. Chamberlain at some point in late 1863, after theBattle of Fort Sanders . It was intended to inter Union dead, from that battle, and later to reinter dead from various battlefield cemeteries in the region.Knoxville National Cemetery was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1996.Notable monuments
