FinnishComet in Moominland (ムーミン谷の彗星 Mūmindani no Suisei ) is an anime film by Telecable Benelux B.V.. The film is based on the novel Comet in Moominland by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson, originally published in Swedish. It was first released in Japan in 1992 as triple-feature with 2 shorter films. It has never released for English. It takes place before the events of the TV series, just after the moomin family had moved into Moominvalley.
Plot
Before the film, Moomin and his parents Moominpappa and Moominmamma have moved to Moominvalley and built a their house.
Moomin, Little My and Sniff went to the beach to find shells for Moomimamma who intends surrounded by flowerbeds. In a trip Sniff found the cave. The same evening it was raining, Moominmamma give Moomintroll pearl, which he could give to someone for which he cared. Moomin knew him talking about a girl, and doesn't believed that would happen. Surprisingly, Muskrat request a place to stay because his home on riverbank was destroyed, where the same day Moominpappa had build the bridge. Muskrat is a philosopher who smelled something strange recently, and argues that the current rain is not natural raining. The next day, Muskrat's words come true, because the rain was black and according to Muskrat that it was soot from space. To entire valley of the people, he notes that the Final Judgment would fall upon them on. Later same day at the dinner table, he tells to Moomins about galaxies, their homeworld, and its fate. He believes that threat is coming from space.
Moominpappa gets the idea about astronomical observatory of lonely mountains, where is a telescope which sees far into space. The next morning, Moomin, Little My and Sniff leaving the valley toward the lonely mountains. On the way they meet Snufkin for the first time when he played the harmonica in a tent close to the river. Snufkin have heard about the comet, which could crush to earth at any time and joins the group. On the way he also tells the old crater that is filled with garnets. Later Sniff is visiting on crater, the aim of garnets to himself. But the large granite monster attacks to Sniff, which Sniff survives for luck and at the same time losing all his food. After that they climb the steep mountains along the observatory, while Moomin found the golden anklet. Snufkin knew, that the anklet belongs to the Snork Maiden, who also was probably traveling with his brother to observatory to investigate the comet.
They arrived at the astronomical observatory, where they find out the comet is colliding after two days. On the way back to home, Moomin saves the Snork Maiden and her brother Snork from carnivorous tree's jaws. They also joins the group. On the way they pass through the bottom of the ocean, which comet had been sucked dry. Here Sniff found an old pocket knife and Snorkmaiden saves Moomintroll and Snufkin from a giant octopus in sunken ship. They eventually reach the Moominvalley which all residents are moving to safe because of the comet. After that Moomin and friends meet Hemulen, which is a philatelist. After survived the hurricane, they arrive in Moomin House, where Moominpapa and Moominmamma are waiting and starts celebrated the Moomin's birthday. Then they decide to move to Sniff cave. Sniff is lost during the move when he saw the kitten and he was followed him by with a piece of Moomin's birthday cake. The comet was already approaching the valley, but Moomin and Snufkin tried to find Sniff and eventually found him in the last minute. The comet was almost crashing the earth, but changes the direction of upward rotation of the circle from it.
Many hours later, the sun returns to shine and the sea comes back and all Moomins and their friends are celebrating it on the beach. At same time Moomin give to the Snork Maiden a pearl, which he got from Moominmama in the beginning of film. After that, he got a kiss from the Snork Maiden.
