O'Hara was born in
Bootle , nearLiverpool . He was educated at the direct-grant grammar Liverpool Collegiate School, thenMagdalen College, Oxford , gaining an MA in Literae Humaniores and theUniversity of London . Before entering Parliament, Eddie was a councillor in Knowsley and Chair of the Education Committee. He lectured at CF Mott College (became Liverpool Polytechnic) from 1970-5, at the City of Liverpool College of Higher Education from 1975-85, and at Liverpool Polytechnic from 1985-90.Personal life
He married Lilian Hopkins on September 11 1962 in Bootle. They have two sons and a daughter.
