Mark Stein (born March 11, 1947) was the vocalist, keyboardist, composer, and arranger for Vanilla Fudge, the Tommy Bolin band, and Alice Cooper's band (from 1978–1979).Early life and influences
Mark Stein was born in Bayonne, New Jersey on March 11, 1947. He began playing piano at age four and later attempted to play the accordion. Upon being exposed to rock 'n' roll in the 1950s, Stein settled on guitar. He worked his way through various bands in his high school While performing with one of these pre-Vanilla Fudge groups, he spied an "old beat-up organ on the stage and started jamming on it."
Stein himself influenced Deep Purple's renowned organist Jon Lord. Lord stated in a 1989 interview that "[he] used to listen to Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge in the late sixties. He was a useful source of tricks on the Hammond."[1]
