Edgemere is a neighborhood in the
New York City borough ofQueens , on the Rockaway Peninsula. It was founded in 1892 byFrederick J. Lancaster , who originally called it New Venice. boardwalk concessions, massiveurban renewal projects in the 1960s precipitated the demolition of the vast majority of these resorts with nothing to replace them, leaving the area largely a wasteland for decades. Only in the 1990s was there any substantial sign of reversing this trend.
