History
New Town Primary School got its name because it was situated in this new town where high-rise, low-cost Housing Development Board (HDB) flats were built.
It was officially opened on 26 July 1965 by the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, then Minister of Finance. This made New Town Primary School as old as the Republic of Singapore, which gained her independence on the 9th of August 1965.
The old campus of New Town Primary School was then located at the junction of Commonwealth Drive and Commonwealth Avenue in Queenstown. The school building was a 4-storey block with 24 classrooms. Most of the students lived in HDB flats around Queenstown. At that time, New Town Primary School was an Integrated School, offering both English-medium and Chinese-medium classes in two sessions, having both morning and afternoon sessions.
In 1983, New Town Primary School became totally English Medium.
It went through two mergers with other primary schools around Queenstown. In 1992, it merged with Permaisura and Farrer Primary Schools. With the merger, New Town Primary School took over the building of Permaisura Primary School which was right next to its old campus. On 2 January 2004, New Town Primary School became single session, only having a morning session. In January 2009, New Town Primary School merged with Ghim Moh Primary School and was relocated to a new campus at 300, Tanglin Halt Road.
After Mrs Lily Ong retired in December 31, 2010, Mdm Irene Ng took over as School Principal in 2011. Current vice principal is Mrs Regina Po.
Education
The school names its classes after six values, Caring, Honesty, Loyalty, Responsible, Respectful and Disciplined. The school has 15 CCAs including Chinese dance and Brownies and Badminton.
