- St Giles', Oxford
St Giles' is a wide street leading north from the centre of
Oxford ,England . At its northern end, the road divides intoWoodstock Road to the left andBanbury Road to the right, both major roads throughNorth Oxford .At the northern end is St Giles' Church whose churchyard includes the main
War Memorial . Working from north to south, on the east side are theLamb & Flag public house (formerly acoaching inn ), St John's College, theOxford Internet Institute (No 1 St Giles'), Balliol College, and Trinity College. On the west side are the International Study Centre ofd'Overbroeck's College , St Benet's Hall, the Theology Faculty, theEagle and Child public house (whereJ. R. R. Tolkien ,C. S. Lewis , and other members of theInklings met), Regent's Park College (Principal's Lodgings and Senior Tutor's house),Pusey House and St Cross College, Blackfriars, and theTaylor Institution , behind which is theAshmolean Museum (with its main entrance inBeaumont Street ). The southern end meetsMagdalen Street at theMartyrs' Memorial (1843 ), commemorating theOxford Martyrs (1555 –56).The street is closed to traffic for two days each September for the traditional St Giles' Fair.
