History
The city was captured by British forces in the Battle of Tsekee on 15 March 1842 during the First Opium War. It was the site of the 1862 Battle of Cixi between Qing imperial forces and Taiping rebels.
Geography
Cixi City is located on the coastal region of East China Sea and the south bank of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. It is located in the Hangzhou Bay Rim economic circle of Yangtze River Delta among Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo. It is 60 km from Ningbo in the east, 148 km from Shanghai in the north and 138 km from Hangzhou in the west. Cixi City covers a total land area of 1,154 square kilometers.[1]
Economy
Cixi is a important manufacturing city in northern Zhejiang province.[2] The Hangzhou Bay New District is located in the city. [2]
It is one of the three biggest home appliance manufacturing centres on mainland China.[2] Cixi has more than 80 000 enterprises across over 30 industries.[2] It is the largest Curio furniture distribution, cigarette lighter, European adapter manufacturing, twill fabric, eel processing zone on mainland China.[2]
Population
At the end of 2008, there were 1,020,000 registered permanent residents and over 770,000 temporary residents. Seventeen towns and three subdistricts are under the jurisdiction of Cixi City and there are 297 administrative villages, 28 residents’ committees and 47 communities.[1]
Culture
The city also houses many Yue Kiln Sites, which are widely regarded as the origin of Chinese porcelain.
