Electromagnetic mass

Electromagnetic mass

The electromagnetic mass of an electrically charged object, such as an electron, is the apparent increase in its mass due to its interaction with the electromagnetic field that surrounds it. This interaction is called the field reaction [ [http://nobelprize.org/physics/laureates/1965/tomonaga-lecture.html Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, Nobel Lecture, May 6, 1966] ] .

The concept first appeared in classical electromagnetic theory, in the work of Heaviside and Lorentz, but also exists in quantum theory.
