Eureka, California (licensed to Arcata). The station runs programming from the ABC network. KAEF is a full-power television station that operates with 141 kw of power and is owned byBluestone Television .KAEF began broadcasting on August 1, 1987 as KREQ, adopting its current calls in
1989 . Before 1987, the North Coast was one of the few areas of the country that still didn't have an ABC affiliate of its own.NBC affilaiteKVIQ andCBS affiliateKIEM-TV carried ABC programming in off-network hours on tape delay. In addition, local cable systems offered the nearest ABC affiliate to the area, Redding'sKRCR-TV on cable. In addition, if people got lucky, they could receive KRCR-TV over the air using a large outdoor antenna with mediocre reception. KRCR, KAEF, and KFWU had secondary FOX affiliations until 1994 whenKCVU became aFOX affiliate and KBVU signed on.KAEF is a semi-satellite of KRCR. However, it has its own branding, commercial inserts, and pre-empts local news, except for "News Channel 7 Daybreak" and a 5-minute weather report at 11pm before "Extra". There are also few programming variants, generally to take into account the lack of local news, as well as programming rights held by other Eureka stations.
The Eureka television market is the only TV market in California currently not available on either
Dish Network orDirecTV .Digital Television
The station's digital channel mirrors KRCR's digital channel:
KAEF's digital signal, along with all the other digital signals in Eureka except for KBVU and
KVIQ are not available on Suddenlink Digital Cable, but the analog signal is available on cable channel 7.Dish Network andDirecTV do not carry both the analog and digital signals for the Eureka market.*When the digital signal does launch on cable, it will be on channel 707.
In
2009 , KAEF will continue digital broadcasts on channel 22 when the analog to digital conversion is complete.http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-06-1082A2.pdf]ee also
