Madayi is a small place in
Kannur district ,Kerala ,South India . It is located nearPayangadi .Madayi is also the site of the famous
Madayi Kavu where devotees worship MotherKali ,Shakthi . The Goddess is known for Her blessings on devotees, and the temple is also famous for the "Koyikalasham" (Offering of chicken). The temple was one of the few to survive desecration by the armies ofTippu Sultan , which devotees attribute to the grace of the Goddess. TheKolathiri Rajahs were the protectors of the temple until it was transferred to the Devaswom Board. Nearby is theVadukunnu Temple dedicated toShiva . The temple was razed by followers of Tippu Sultan in the 18th century, but fortunately the temple has been rebuilt and is a vibrant centre of religion in the region.Madayi is also well-known for the "
Malik Ibn Dinar mosque". This beautiful ancient mosque is believed to have been originally built byMalik Ibn Dinar , aMuslim preacher. A block of white marble in the mosque is believed to have been brought fromMecca by its founder, who came to India to spread the word of the Prophet. Near by, lies a dilapidated fort believed to have been built byTipu Sultan , the ruler ofMysore .Madayi today hosts a vibrant community of Hindus and Muslims alike.
