Madayi Kavu is a famous
Hindu temple dedicated to Kali Amma inKerala ,India . The temple, now under the administration ofDevaswom Board , was originally under the control of theKolathiri Kings. The temple, situated inMadayi nearPayangadi , is an important site of worship in theKannur District and Kerala region.The temple is also associated with
Mannanpurathu Kavu (dedicated toKali ) andVadukunnu Temple (dedicated toShiva ).The origin of the temple is ancient, possibly pre-existing
Vedic times. The main diety worshipped hear is "Madayi Kavu Amma" who isBhagavathi in the form ofKali . Other deities are also present. The priests at the temple belong to a particular sect associated with Kali worship. A particular aspect of the temple is "Koyi Kalasham" which is the sacrifice of poultry for the Goddess which is held in high regard.The temple was spared from destruction by
Tipu Sultan (whose followers destroyed the nearby Vadukunnu Temple). The Madayi Kavu temple was saved from destruction by aNair warrior (belonging to the Vengayil family) who received the title ofNayanar from the temple authorities ("Sthanaperu"). Till this day members of the Vengayil Nayanar family are held in high esteem at the temple.ee also
