Suvarnadurg

Suvarnadurg

Suvarnadurg (also spelt in England as "Severndroog") is an island fortress near Harnai in Konkan, along the western coast of India, between Mumbai and Goa. It was built by Shivaji, initially to counter the Siddi, but was also used as a defence against European interests and was a base for the Maratha navy's ship-building facility.

In the mid-18th century, the fortress became the base of Maratha Admiral Tulaji Angre (also spelt Tollagee Angria; son of Admiral Kanhoji Angre), but was attacked and destroyed by a force led by William James on 2 April 1755. Severndroog Castle in southeast London was named after Suvarnadurg and built to commemorate Commodore Sir William James who destroyed the fortress.
