Adelaide Showgrounds

The Adelaide Showgrounds, formerly the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds or Wayville Showgrounds hold many of Adelaide's most popular events including the Royal Adelaide Show.

The Showgrounds are located just south of Greenhill Road and are bordered by Goodwood Road in the suburb of Wayville. The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of South Australia (RAHS) has controlled the site since the 1920s, the land having been purchased by the South Australian government prior to World War One. The showgrounds have one of the largest under cover exhibition spaces in the Southern Hemisphere. The Royal Show moved to the present site in 1925. The showgrounds host over 140 exhibitions and conferences each year as well as University of Adelaide and University of South Australia examinations. The RAHS also leases the former Investigator Science and Technology Centre to the Edge Church. The Adelaide Showgrounds have recently received significant public attention in regards to demolition of the Centennial Hall, the Walter Duncan Hall and the Mad Mouse rollercoaster to make way for a new, multi-purpose exhibition hall. Centennial Hall was considered to be a significant historical landmark, having been constructed to commemorate the centenary of the colonisation of South Australia. It was one of the few remaining examples of 1930s Art Deco architecture in Adelaide. Demolition of Centennial Hall commenced on Wednesday July 18th, 2007.

The gravel track around the main oval was originally used as a trotting track. It is now used occasionally for speedway bikes and cars.
