Marcellus Hall is an American artist and musician best known for his work in magazines including The New Yorker, Time and others.
Biography
Marcellus Hall was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota,[1] and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design.[2] He moved to New York City, New York, where he became a founding member of the band Railroad Jerk. The group released four albums on Matador Records from 1990 to 1996.[2] From the following year through 2005, Hall sang for the band White Hassle.[3]
Hall has illustrated for the alternative weekly newspaper New York Press, the newspaper The Wall Street Journal, and magazines including Atlantic Monthly, Habitat, American Illustration, Communication Arts. The New Yorker, with his first cover appearing in 2005, and Time, as well as in Society of Illustrators annuals.[2] He illustrated the covers of the novels White Pigeons (2004) and 57 Octaves Below the Middle C (2006), both by Chris Leo and published by Fifth Plannet Press, and illustrated the children's books Because You Are My Baby (2008), by Sherry North, and City I Love (2009), by Lee Bennett Hopkins, both published by Harry Abrams. A selection of sketches was published in Le Sketch #05, 2008.
In late November 2008, an exhibition of Hall's illustrations inaugurated the art gallery of Mundo Fantasma, a comic-book store with an art gallery, in Porto, Portugal.[citation needed]
