Smartville, California

Smartsville is a town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. It is one of the many historic towns in California's gold country. Smartsville is located in Yuba County, about 35 miles east of Marysville on State Highway 20. It lies at an elevation of 669 feet (204 m).

Smartsville is named for Jim Smart, a local hotel proprietor during the days of the Gold Rush. Other nearby Gold Rush towns with picturesque names are Timbuctoo, Sucker Flat and Rough and Ready. Extensive placer mining tailings remain throughout the area.

Smartsville gave its name to a co-extensive geologic zone of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Smartville Complex which is associated with the presence of gold veins in the Mother Lode country.

Due to a ruling by the U.S. Postal Service, Smartsville was legally recorded as "Smartville" from 1909 to 2008. The US Board on Geographical Names ruled in August of 2008 that they could resume using their original name.

The Smartville Cemetery is a historic cemetery.
