In 1947, the Auburn Heights Elementary School combined with three schools in Avon Township (now Rochester Hills) to form a school district. The name Avondale was chosen after a contest. The first Avondale High was built in Avon Township in
1952 , now known as Avondale Meadows Upper Elementary. The current building opened in 1970. It was a low, modern building, rectangular in plan. Four years later, the auditorium, auto shop, pool and wrestling room were constructed. Art rooms, broadcast facilities, and other classrooms were completed in1991 , and a new hallway of classrooms, auxiliary gym and pool renovations were completed a few years later. Between1998 and2000 , the building underwent its most extensive improvements, with a new fieldhouse, media center and cafeteria (which was converted from the original gym). The most recent construction was finished in2006 , for classroom additions and a renovated auditorium with a fly loft.Athletics
The team name and mascot of Avondale is the Avondale Yellow Jackets. Varsity and JV sports are held there (Freshmen teams were cut). The girls' Varsity Basketball team usually ranks high in the state. In 2001-2002, the Boy's Varsity Basketball team won the State Championship for Division B. Currently, the Boys Varsity Soccer team is ranked #2 in the state. Avondale wrestling team placed 2nd at regionals, losing by 4 points.
