Camp Nelson National Cemetery
- Camp Nelson National Cemetery
Camp Nelson National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located at Camp Nelson, in Jessamine County, Kentucky, about five miles south of Nicholasville, Kentucky. It was named for Major General William Nelson, commander of the Civil War Army of Kentucky, who was killed in 1862. It encompasses 30.2 acres, and as of the end of 2005, has 12,034 interments.
History
The cemetery was created in 1863 as a place to bury Union soldiers who died while serving in and around Camp Nelson during the Civil War. More land was set aside in 1866, and it was designated a National Cemetery in 1868. Several battlefield burial sites around the state had their remains reinterred in Camp Nelson. In 1874 an additional acre was purchased, and in 1975 a donation of an additional 10 acres allowed for expansion of the cemetery.
Camp Nelson National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
