Poland , with a population of 18,661 (2004). It is the capital ofHrubieszów County .Since 1999 Hrubieszów has been part of Lublin Province ( _pl. województwo lubelskie). Earlier, 1975–98, it had been part of Zamość Province ("województwo zamojskie").

The town was founded in 1400 by
Władysław Jagiełło , king of Poland. He returned to Hrubieszów in 1411, 1413 and 1430. A castle and church were later added.Kazimierz Jagiellończyk built a road fromLublin toLviv passing by Hrubieszów. The town was eventually destroyed byUkrainians andTatars . In 1800Stanisław Staszic founded the Agricultural Society of Hrubieszów, the first co-operative organisation in Europe. During theSecond World War the region witnessed theZamość Uprising ; many inhabitants including the 7,000 inhabitants of the Jewish ghetto in the town were killed during the war.Monuments
