Tullylish (In Irish: "Tulach Lis" means 'hill of the fort') is a small
village inCounty Down ,Northern Ireland , one and a half miles east ofGilford . In the 2001 Census it had a population of 105 people. It lies within theBanbridge District Council area and also contains the village ofLawrencetown .There were many mills in the Tullylish area, all along the
River Bann . The village is very small, with just a few houses and the parish church across the bridge. Some of its buildings are now art/craft shops and one is a restaurant called 'The Potbelly'.History
The village owes its origin to the siting of an early
monastery on an elevated hill overlooking the River Bann to the east of the presentChurch of Ireland church in thetownland of Tullylish.People
John Butler Yeats (artist and writer,1839 -1922 ), father ofWilliam Butler Yeats andJack Butler Yeats , was brought up in Tullylish at Vicarage Farm,Lawrencetown .Jeremy Irons (actor), The BBC series "Who do you think you are?" revealed that Jeremy Irons family originated from Tullylish Parish, Gilford.Sport
Lawrencetown is home to Tullylish G.A.A club, which was originally known as 'St.Patrick's G.A.A Club' when it was formed in July 1944.
