Lawrencetown, County Down

Lawrencetown ("Baile Lorcan" in Irish) Known locally as 'Laurencetown', is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is situated on the main route between Banbridge and Portadown. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 629 people. It resides in the Parish and townland of Tullylish.It has only one shop in the village, a filling station under the Texaco and Spar brand.

Lawrencetown is classified as a small village or hamlet by the [http://www.nisra.gov.uk/ NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)] (ie with population between 500 and 1,000 people). On Census day (29 April 2001) there were 629 people living in Lawrencetown. Of these:
*24.6% were aged under 16 years and 16.7% were aged 60 and over
*50.4% of the population were male and 49.6% were female
*87.4% were from a Catholic background and 12.1% were from a Protestant background
*3.1% of people aged 16-74 were unemployed

Lawrencetown is home to Tullylish G.A.A, club which was originally known as 'St.Patrick's G.A.A Club' when it was formed in July 1944.

Birthplace of John B. Yeats

Father of the Protestant, Irish Republican poet, 'William Butler Yeats', Lawrencetown's famous son was John B. Yeats who was born and brought up in the village.An accomplished artist and writer in later years, John was born in 1839 and died in 1922 living the last 15 years of his life in New York.
