UBC and graduated with aBSc and attended a Long Operations Officers course. He joined the navy in 1963 and worked his way up the ranks. He was Commanding Officer ofHMCS Restigouche , Naval Captain, Commander of the First Canadian Destroyer Squadron, Chief of Staff at the National Defence HQ; Commodore, Director-General of Maritime Doctrine and Operations; Rear-Admiral; Head, Canadian Nuclear Submarine Acquisition Project; Chief of Maritime Doctrine and Operations.In the early 1980s he commanded the Naval Officers' Training Centre, at
CFB Esquimalt ,Esquimalt, British Columbia , where he was nicknamed "JR" after a popular TV character from the show Dallas.In 1993, Admiral Anderson became
Chief of Defence Staff of theCanadian Forces .In 1994, he was appointed Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization inBrussels ,Belgium .In 1989, he was made a Commander of the Order of Military Merit.
