The Sumra dynasty, (also written Soomra dynasty or Soomro Dynasty) was established by Sumra Muslim Rajput tribe of
Sindh .The Sumra ruled
Sindh from1026 -1351 . The dynasty had bothArab and local Sindhi heritage. The early Sumra rulers wereFatimid Shia Ismailis who owed allegiance to Fatmid Khalifas ofCairo . They sent them tribute and read their names in the FridayKhutba in Masjids.Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni an OrthodoxSunni Muslim in his campaign to defeat heterodoxShia Ismaili sect conquered the Sumra capital of Mansura. The Sumra shifted their capital toTharri , nearly 14 km eastwards ofMatli on thePuran . Puran was later abandoned due to changes in the course ofPuran river . ThenThatta was the capital for about 95 years until the end of their rule in 1351 AD. The Sumra was defeated by theSamma Dynasty, Jams ofLasbela or currently known as theAliani s. Today the Soomro clan is settled in partsSindh and southern Punjab.See also
The Soomros were originally
Hindu Rajputs some of these SoomroRajputs escaped conversion when Islamic rule came toSindh , they fled and settled in the Saurastran city ofPorbandar and became part of theMers caste. They are known with the surname Odedra.
*Soomro The Sumra is a Muslim community of Gujarat named after Samara, a place in Iran, where their ancestor Mohamed Haneef Ali had settled. They had converted from the Parmar Rajputs of Mallani and Rajaputana communities. It is also believed that they are descendants of Samri Ameer Dinar and were called Samro before it was changed to Sumra. They had migrated to Kutch and then to Saureshtra in Sindh. Stories of their migration are recalled in their folk lore and oral traditions.
They speak Kachchi and Gujarati. Traditionally they were warriors but at present they are involved in business, agriculture, government and private service.
