Magsi

Magsi (Urdu: مگسی) is a name of Baloch tribe in the Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan and Balochistan province of Iran.

The Magsi tribe came from Iran where is place name is Magas in Lishar. They migrated to modern Pakistan with Lashari and Rind tribes that is the reason some historians called them branch of Lashari tribe. The origin of Magsi are also related to Jamots. In Baluchistan, province of Pakistan, they are known Magsi Baloch. In Sindh they are considered Sindhi Baloch. In northern Punjab they speak Punjabi while southern Punjab they speak Seraiki. Most of the Magsi tribe is settled in Jhal Magsi District. The clans of Magsi tribe include: Buhtani and Shambani. The Butani is the Nawab family. Shambai is Tumandar (chief Makhdoom). The clans of Shambani are: Vasdani, Salokhani, Muglani, Laskani, Bungulani, Sargani and etc. The current Nawab of the Magsi tribe is Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Khan Magsi. He is from Butani family and Tumandar is Mir Mousa Khan Magsi. He belong from Shambani family and then Hesbani, which includes Berkani and then Anglani. Mir Jangi Khan Magsi Baloch was their leader. Mir Ghulam Qadir Magsi was also their leader and Mir Taj Muhammad Magsi was also their leader (they are great fighters of Magsi tribe in their time)Hasrani. Nowadays Mir Aftab Ahmed Magsi is their leader. they mostly reside in shahdadkot, nawabshah, sukrund, sanghar, nari, mithoo etc. Shambani, Balwani, Bujerani, Dalkhani, Nindani, Bojani, Rawtani, Sobhani, Safrani,(Sabrani), Sakhani, Salokhani, Soomrani and Admani. They speak the Sindhi and Balochi languages. Another Magsi sub-tribe has been living in Sindh since 200 years known as Soomrani, where Mithani, Rakhyani, Dangrani, Faujani and Hyderani are sub-castes of Soomrani. Almost 70 percent of Soomrani are educated and used to live in peace and prosperity, where as they are followers of Sufism. Abdul Ghani Magsi & Abdul Majeed Magsi are their current leaders and Beera Khan Magsi was also their leader and great fighter against injustice.


Buhtani is a clan of Magsi tribe. Buhtani are well educated, distance between Shambani village and Jhal Magsi city is 60km and they are very close to Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Khan Magsi.

A large number of Magsis are living in the Pakistani province of Punjab. Their communities can be found in the districts of, Muzzaffar Garh, Layyah, Khanewal, Lodhran, Raheemyar khan,Bhakkar, Dera Ismail Khan and Multan.

[edit] Magsi Force In 1988, President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq died in an air crash and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's daughter Benazir Bhutto was elected as Prime Minister. Benazir Bhutto's government decided to replace the Hur Force with a new force called Magsi Force, consisting of militants from the tribe of Mir Nadir Ali Magsi, a rival of Hurs. Benazir Bhutto encouraged and supported clash between forces and after bloody clashes the Hur Force was weakened substantially.

The Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi is the current chief of Magsi tribe, and he is now governor of Balochistan. Nawab Sardar Mir Kaisar Khan Magsi (K.C.I.E) Nawab Sardar Mir Mehboob Ali Magsi 2 sons Nawab Mir Saifullah Khan Magsi Mir Yousuaf Ali Khan Magsi 7 sons Nawab Zulfiqar Mir Tariq Mir Akbar Mir Nadir Mir Amer Mir Khalid Mir Zafar & 2 daughters.

Present Nawab/Sardar the 23rd is Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi. Eighty percent of the land belongs to the Nawab and his brothers. Rest belongs to the tribe. The tribe migrated from Syria around 1400 years ago to Iraq. This was around 150 years after karbala incident. The tribe then migrated to Iran from Karbala to escape persecution. They were incharge of the Magas area of eastern Iran in the Sistan, Balochistan area of Iran. Then at the time of Jalal khan the tribe migrated to present day Baluchistan around 1423. Among the many prominent acts of courage by the Magi’s include giving refuge to Emperor Humayun with tribe from where he went on to win the battle of Panipat. Nawabzada Zulfiqar Magsi is the current chief of Magsi tribe, and is also the governor of Balochistan, and his younger brother Nawabzada Mir Nadir Magsi is the food Minister of Sindh.
