History

Annapolils National Cemetery was one of the 14 national cemeteries established by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. The original plot of land was leased from a local, Nicholas Brewer, for a period of 99 years, but eventually, Brewer’s heirs sold the land to the federal government.

During the Civil War, Annapolis was a Union recruit training center. It was generally crowded and conditions were not particularly sanitary. Many soldiers succumbed to small pox and typhoid fever. Most of the original interments were men who died in the camps or nearby hospitals. Annapolis was also an exchange point for Confederate prisoners of war, some of them died while in captivity, and were subsequently interred in the cemetery.

Many soldiers from more modern wars are also interred there.

Annapolis National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
