History
The school was established in 1982, as an English language school based on a British curriculum, open to both Sri Lankan and foreign students.
In 1993, the new Chairman, Armyne Wirasinha [1][not in citation given],[2][not in citation given],[3][not in citation given] initiated a development and expansion programme. In 1998, a branch, 'CIS Kandy was opened in Mawilmada.
The school has expanded over the last 24 years to reach the present enrollment of 1400 students from 30 countries. There are now about 120 students in each year group attending the school.
Curriculum
CIS is an academically oriented school, concentrating on subjects in the Arts and Sciences, though the majority of students in the upper sections follow courses dominated by the Sciences. It prepares its students for the Edexcel General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary (O, Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A2) Level examinations in many subjects.
These British examinations are the usual qualifications required for entry into British Universities. In July 2001 there was a pass rate of nearly 93% at the London A-Level examinations, with 73% A, B and C grades.[citation needed] Entry into the Sixth Form is dependent on success at the GCE O’Level examinations.
Digital Art & Animation
In 2000 Digital Art was introduced to the school by Anushka Wirasinha [4],[5],[6] and a few years later Animation. The Digital Art and Animation competition and exhibition [7],[8] has now grown to be a national event with over 1000 students participating from over 30 schools in the country. Last year the Colombo International School Colombo branch won the competition.[9]
Model United Nations
Students take part in the Model United Nations conference annually.[10] In 2010 the school won the SLMUN.[11],[12]
Mother Lanka
Mother Sri Lanka was started by the President of Sri Lanka to create positive change in the country. Colombo International School took part in this event and working around the theme "I must change for my country to change" the students gave a presentation and received the award.[13]
