Notable_instruments =Jack's Broken Heart was an indie,
emo andpost-hardcore quintet from San Diego, California.History
Jack's Broken Heart formed in September 1999. The original lineup was Jason Guilliani (Vocals), Seth McCarter (Guitar), Bill Nephew (Guitar), Kyle Thompson (Bass), and David Esau (Drums). Just three months after their beginning, the band recorded a demo to use while booking shows. The demo met such strong demand that Jack's Broken Heart pressed one thousand copies and released the album as an
EP entitled "Against Forgetting".Over the next year, Jack's Broken Heart began to catch the attention of
Southern California music fans, sharing the stage with bands such asJimmy Eat World ,Samiam ,Hot Water Music ,The Juliana Theory , andHey Mercedes . Well-known for Jason Guilliani's 'open book' style of writing and the bands emotionally intense live show, the group quickly developed an impressive following. In November 2000, Jack's Broken Heart went into Double Time Studios to record their second 5-song demo, this time with Jeff Forrest (
Blink 182 ,Rocket From the Crypt ,Fluf ,Jejune , andKill Holiday ). After recording, the band went through a line-up change. Bassist Kyle Thompson moved to theLos Angeles area to pursue a career in recording. Lee LaDouceur stepped in as the bands' youngest member. The EP was also intended for promotional use only. To make the music more accessible, and to let their fans know what they were up to, Jack's Broken Heart decided to post the new material onMP3.com . Within days, the track "Loved and Lost Everything" reached #1 on the Emo charts, where it stayed for well over 8 weeks, ahead of bands likeThe Juliana Theory andNew Found Glory . The song also hit #3 on the Punk charts and #7 on the Alternative charts. In less than one year, Jack's Broken Heart received over 100,000 MP3.com downloads.Surprisingly, the group's first EP/demo, "Against Forgetting", received a nomination for 'Best Alternative Album' for the 2001 [http://sdmusicawards.com/PastWinners2005.shtml San Diego Music Awards] . The band itself was also nominated for 'Best Alternative Band.' The band garnered the 'Best Alternative Band' award for 2001.
In late 2001, the band posted news that they were writing material for a full-length record, tentatively titled, "The End of Your Era", and also independently booking their first U.S. tour.
It was at this point that the band left a solid
Internet fanbase wanting more by presumably breaking up. There were no further songs released, eventually the merchandise ran out, and the web site was no longer updated. This was not confirmed by the band until years later via the websitepurevolume . It has since been revealed that the bands last show was July 5, 2002. The band also rumored a reunion tour via the purevolume platform. On December 13, 2005 the band released a brand new song on
MySpace titled "Ticker Tape Parade". The song was recorded in 2001 in Toronto by Matthew Dross and was never before released. On February 23, 2006 the band's lead singer, Jason Guilliani mentioned that the MySpace page would be changing frequently in the coming weeks with rare photography, unreleased recordings, video footage and more.
