USS "Lapeer" (PC-1188) was a patrol craft in the
United States Navy ."PC-1138" was laid down at the
Defoe Shipbuilding Company inBay City, Michigan , on9 January 1943 ; launched on19 April 1943; and commissioned atNew Orleans, Louisiana , on17 September 1943, withLieutenant Gilbert N. Cooper in command.After shakedown off
Florida , "PC-1138" departed New Orleans on14 November escorting aconvoy of LSTs toCoco Solo ,Panama Canal Zone , arriving there on22 November . She sailed on5 December escorting the repair ship USS "Luzon" (ARG-2) toFunafuti , then continued on to theNew Hebrides on convoy escort duty. Escort runs from Funafuti continued until1 May , when she sailed for theSolomon Islands , arriving atFlorida Island on6 May . She operated onpatrol and escort duties in the Solomons, occasionally sailing to islands to the south, until departing forUlithi , where she arrived on14 December .Between December 1944 and July 1945, "PC-1138" provided essential escort for ship movements related to the
Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns, sailing from Ulithi to thePalaus ,Eniwetok , andGuam . She arrived atPearl Harbor on5 August , and operated out of there until sailing for the west coast on20 May 1946 . After calling inSan Francisco, California , she reachedAstoria, Oregon , on21 June , and was decommissioned there on13 September 1946 . While berthed in reserve in theColumbia River , she was named "Lapeer" on1 February 1956 , after thecounty seat ofLapeer County in easternMichigan , about 20 miles east ofFlint, Michigan .Her name was struck from the
Naval Register on1 April 1959 and she was subsequently sold.ource
