owner=The Bank of America Plaza, located at 901 Main Street in downtown Dallas,Texas (USA) is a 72-story modern-styledskyscraper . Standing at a structural height of 921 feet (281 m), it is the tallest skyscraper in the city of Dallas. It is also the third tallest building in Texas and the 24th tallest building in theUnited States , while also being the 53rd tallest building in the world. It contains 1,900,000 square feet (177,000 m²) of office space. The building was designed byJPJ Architects Inc. and Bramalea LTD. under the direction of Douglas Salter of Denver. Construction began in 1983 and finished in 1985. It is known informally as "The Green Building" or "The Green Tower" due to the green argon lighting which outlines the building at night. It has also been lovingly referred to as the "Jolly Green Giant".Design
Lighting
The building's outline is accented at night by green
argon lighting that runs along all of the building's edges (see picture).Efficiency
The skyscraper was one of the first buildings in the
United States to receive theEnergy Star award for electrical efficiency.Communications
The top floor functions as a communications center using the building itself as a giant super antenna. All point-to-point
microwave and fixed-service antennas are concealed within a specifically designed glass communicationsparapet on the top floor. The base of the parapet opens to the 72nd floor below allowing for easy and safe access during installation and servicing of wireless devices. It also protects the hardware from weather. James T. Chiles designed this innovative feature in 1984 and went on to develop television broadcast towers in cities worldwide.History
The development was originally called the Dallas Main Center, then Interfirst Bank Plaza, next Republic Bank Plaza, then First Republic Bank Plaza, followed by NCNB Plaza,
NationsBank Plaza, and finallyBank of America Plaza in 1998. It was the only tower built out of an original four-tower plan, one of which was a twin to the original tower that would have been illuminated with purple neon.References
