Ferguson Left

Ferguson Left

The Independent Left, or the Ferguson Left as it is more commonly known, is a political faction within the Victorian Branch of the Australian Labor Party. The faction was founded by Martin Ferguson, a former president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). Although educated in Sydney, Ferguson is a Victorian member of the Australian House of Representatives. Other members of the faction include Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Minister for Employment Participation Brendan O'Connor, former Victorian government Minister for Housing and Local Government Candy Broad, and Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) Assistant National Secretary Michael O'Connor.

The Ferguson Left faction is often seen as more moderate than the larger and older Socialist Left faction.

Other MPs outside Victoria are close to the group, including Ferguson's brother Laurie Ferguson, who is also a Federal MP, Daryl Melham and Warren Snowdon. [http://www.theadvertiser.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,18418958%255E911,00.html]
