As teenagers, they began writingsong s and forming bands, and in college they formedMidnight Star , a synth-funk outfit that broke up in 1988.After Star ran its course, the two left to focus on solo and producing work. Previously they had written hits for acts like
Teddy Pendergrass ("Joy"),Gladys Knight & the Pips ( "Love Overboard"),Natalie Cole ( "Jump Start"),Levert ("Casanova"),Klymaxx ("Meeting in the Ladies Room"), andThe Whispers ("Contagious") in addition to Midnight Star, and as the duo Calloway, they scored a number twoBillboard Hot 100 hit with "I Wanna Be Rich".
