Mausumi Dikpati is a scientist at the High Altitude Observatory operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. She was the first person to predict, in March 2006, the strength and timing of the next solar cycle based on simulations of the physics of the solar interior.[1] Dikpati's prediction in early 2006 was that the next solar cycle ('Cycle 24') would begin in late 2007 and would be 30%-50% stronger than the previous cycle ('Cycle 23'). As of 2009, all known model-based predictions, have proven to be dramatically incorrect, indicating that the solar dynamo and sunspot cycle are not well enough understood to enable meaningful physics-based prediction. Sunspot activity has continued to decline throughout 2007 and as of mid-2009, there have been few detectable sunspots.
