Electoral district of Vasse

Electoral district of Vasse

Vasse is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Vasse district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Vasse, and is said to hold the seat of Vasse. As of 2005, the Member for Vasse is Troy Buswell who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 0.9%. The seat was retained by Mr Buswell at the 2008 state election.

Profile

A narrow electorate covering the urban areas of the Shire of Busselton stretching along the southern shore of Geographe Bay. It includes all of the urban areas of Busselton north of the bypass, along with Dunsborough, Quindalup and Yallingup. Covers 195 km².

History

Vasse has been held by the Liberal Party since 1950 and Masters is only the third member to represent the seat in half a century. He won the seat in a contest against the National Party in 1996 following the retirement of former MP Barry Blaikie. The region draws its name from Thomas Timothee Vasse, a sailor on Captain Nicholas Baudin's 1802 French voyage of discovery who drowned in the waters of Geographe Bay, though legends persist that he survived and lived with the local indigenous population.
