Yeniseysk —March 23 ,1948 ,Moscow Great Russian Encyclopedia (2006),Moscow : Bol'shaya Rossiyskaya Enciklopediya Publisher, vol. 1, p. 9] ) was a Sovietalpinist andsculptor . He is noted for making the first ascent of the highest point of the Soviet Union - Stalin Peak (later renamed) (7495 m) onSeptember 3 ,1933 as a member of the 26th detachment of theTajik -PamirSovnarkom expedition. At the beginning of theGreat Patriotic War Abalakov went to the front. In the spring of 1948 Abalakov died of obscure circumstances while preparing for the ascent to theVictory Peak . His brother,Vitaly Abalakov , was also a famous alpinist.Bibliography
