The term Green Scare, alluding to the
Red Scare s, periods of fear over communist infiltration of U.S. society, is a term popularized by environmental activists to refer to legal action by the U.S. government against the radical environmentalist movement.It is first known to have appeared in 2002 in the wake of the February 12 congressional hearings titled "The Threat of Eco-Terrorism" which discussed groups including the
Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and theAnimal Liberation Front (ALF).
