- East Shore Hospital and Medical Centre
EAST SHORE HOSPITAL opened in the 1930s as the Paglar Maternity and Nursing Home, and was founded byDr Charles Joesph Pemberton-Paglar.
Educated at St Joesph's Institution in Malacca and is fondly remembered as their best scholar and sports boy.
Charles or "Charlie" as he was later known studied Medicine in Singapore and subsequently won the prestigious scholarship,the "QUEENS DIAMOND JUBILEE PRIZE" to study Medicine in Edinburgh the leading Medical School in his day.
One of the few Singapore residents who can speak with authority concerning "Dr Charles Joesph Pemberton-Paglar" is"His Excellency Mr S.R.Nathan President of the Republic of Singapore" whose family were well acquainted with him.
"Dato" Dr C.J.P.Paglar was Patron to no less than 50 charitable causes and was often referred to as the "Poor man's friend".
He is remembered for his charm wit and intelligence and commitment to serving the people of Singapore.
His generosity of spirit and kindness to those less fortunate made him an exceptional individual.
After his tragic passing on the 9th of December 1954 the hospital was sold.
He is survived by his daughter former President of the NEW ZEALAND PHYSIOTHERAPISTS SOCIETY and his grandson who choose professionalstudies in the LAW in AUSTRALIA.
Dr Leo Taylor who purchased the family hospital renamed it "Saint Mark's Maternity Hospital".
Two years later, the hospital was sold to [Hong Leong] for [residential area|residential] purposes. However, the land was zoned for hospital use. Another doctor, Dr. Sundarason and a group of businessman and doctors in 1974.
The new management modernised the hospital's facilities and then commenced operations later that year as a 45 bed Saint Mark's Hospital. [1977|Three years later] , Dr [Yahya Cohen] together with [American Medical International] entered a [joint venture] with the former to form Saint Mark's AMI Private Limited in May 1979.
Saint Mark's further purchased a 40,000 ft2 site adjacent to the existing building in 1982. It also increased to 49 beds as well. In 1983, AMI took over the facility and was renamed The American Hospital of Singapore which it then began to offer some of its speciality services. A medical office building to house speciality clinics was completed in March 1987 and the tenants moved into the building.
The [National Medical Enterprises] acquired the hospital in 1989 and was renamed to its current name. [Parkway Holdings] acquired both East Shore and [Mount Elizabeth Hospital] s in 1995 making Parkway the largest private healthcare organisation in the country.
