(1997)"Pure Phase" was the second
album to be released bySpiritualized , released in 1995, and credited as "Spiritualized Electric Mainline" (Jason Pierce stated at the time that Spiritualized were actually called "Spiritualized Lazer Guided Melodies", so titled after theirdebut , and nearly called them "Spiritualized Rocket Shaped Songs" for their next album, but soon rejected the latter idea) Again, the album saw a fluctuating line, with the band reduced to a core trio of Jason Pierce, Kate Radley and Sean Cook. Previous band member Mark Refoy and Jonny Mattock performed the main guitar and drums sections respectively, but by the time of album release, both men had been sacked from the band. The album features contributions from
The Balanescu Quartet .The track Born Never Asked is a cover of a song byLaurie Anderson .The track 'Pure Phase' was the basis for a limited edition release called Pure Phase Tones For DJ's. , which consisted of 16 versions of Pure Phase, 4 on each side of the single playable at both 33 and 45rpm. The tracks were in the key of: C/F; D/G; E/A; F/Bflat; G/C; A/D; B/E; C/F, at varying frequencies. Jason intended that they were to be used as a set, in order to makechords . The 'Pure Phase Tone' also features heavily in Spiritualized's live set to this day, playing in between songs and before they go onstage, acting as their entrance music of sorts. The album was recorded in the Moles Studio, in Bath.
Initial CD copies of the album were sold in a glow-in-the-dark, encapsulated CD case.
