SEPTA Route 44

SEPTA Route 44 is a public transportation bus route operated by SEPTA, that operated between Center City Philadelphia and Ardmore in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania.

Route

The route, starting at the Independence National Historical Park at Fifth Street and Market Street in Center City, then runs westbound along Market Street. Along Market Street, the bus provides access to SEPTA Regional Rail service at Market East Station, Suburban Station, and 30th Street Station. Access to the Market-Frankford Line is avaialable at the subway stops at Fifth Street, Eighth Street, 11th, 13th Street, 15th Street, and 30th Street. The Route intersects the Broad Street Line at City Hall. Access to the SEPTA Subway-Surface Trolley Lines is available at 13th Street, 15th Street, 19th Street, 22nd Street, and 30th Street. Access to Amtrak trains is also available at 30th Street Station. The 44 bus also provides connection to the following SEPTA Bus Routes along Market Street: 2, 7, 17, 21, 23, 27, 31, 32, 33, 38, 47, 61, 121, 124, 125, and C.

At 30th Street Station, the 44 bus then proceeds westbound on the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76, and then takes City Avenue (U.S. Route 1) south. Along City Avenue, the 44 connects to the 38 bus at Presidential Boulevard. At Bala Avenue, the 44 bus provides access to Bala station on the R6 Cynwyd Regional Rail line. The 44 bus also provides limited service to Cynwyd station, also on the R6 Cynwyd line. At 54th Street and City Avenue, the 44 bus provides connections to SEPTA's 1, 52, 65, and 121 bus routes. Attractions along City Avenue include the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, City Avenue Hospital, and Saint Joseph's University.

Some weekday buses terminate at 54th Street and City Avenue, but those that continue on further head westbound on Old Lancaster Road and then Montgomery Avenue. Some buses leave Montgomery Avenue to serve Narberth station along the R5 Paoli-Thorndale Regional Rail line. The bus, regardless of whether it serves Narberth station, terminates at Suburban Square in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, providing access to Ardmore Regional Rail station on the R5 Paoli-Thorndale line. Between City Avenue and Ardmore, the bus provides access to Lower Merion High School. In Ardmore, the 44 bus provides connections to SEPTA bus routes 103, 105, and 106.

Usage Statistics

In FY 2003, the 44 route required twelve buses at peak hours. On route also had 3,740 average weekday boardings and 1,233,078 annual passengers, with an annual passenger revenue of $1,266,371. The fully allocated cost of operating the route was $4,142,802, the route had a fare box recovery of thirty-one percent.
