A day spa is a business establishment which people visit for professionally administered personal care treatments such as massages and facials. It is similar to a beauty salon in that it is only visited for the duration of the treatment. Day spas sited in airport terminals are often called airport spas, which also offer services for hair and nails. In contrast, a destination spa offers the same services in a hotel setting where people reside for a day or more.

Medical spa

A medical spa, medispa or med-spa (USA usage) are terms that describes any medical office that operates under the supervision of a licensed health care professional, such as a medical doctor (MD) and offers non-surgical elective cosmetic medical treatments. A medical spa is a hybrid between a medical clinic (doctor’s office) and a day spa that operates under the supervision of medical doctor. Medical spas may offer additional treatments that can only be administered by licensed medical professionals, such as MD's, aestheticians, or RN's.

A medical spa, medispa or med-spa (UK usage) are terms that describes a clinic that operates under the authority of the Care & Quality Commission, and offers non-surgical and day surgical elective cosmetic medical treatments. A medical spa or medispa combines elements of a (cosmetic) doctor's surgery, an aesthetics clinic and a beauty salon.

Treatments offered depend upon the scope of practice of the licensed practitioner and may include:

• Laser medicine, such as skin tightening, laser hair removal, laser vein treatments, treatment of pigmented lesions or moles, treatment of sun damage, etc.
• Microdermabrasion
• Photo-facials or photorejuvenation
• Botulinum toxin (Botox)
• Dermal filler injections

History

The term "day spa" was coined back in the 1980s by Catherine Atzen, upon her entry from France to the United States. There is some challenge, from Burke Williams of San Francisco, who also claims to have coined the term.^{[citation needed]} The first airport spa was created on November 17, 2000 at Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal C located in Newark, New Jersey, USA.
