Vallenciennes, 1848The least cisco, Coregonus sardinella, is a freshwater species of fish that inhabits some marginal seas of the Arctic. It is found from the Murchison River in Canada to Bristol Bay in Alaska, and in the Russian Arctic from the Kara Sea eastwards across the Laptev Sea, the East Siberian Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the northern part of the Bering Sea. It has been also introduced in some lakes and rivers in Uzbekistan.
This fish is not found above 80° of latitude.
In Russian it is known as "Belomorskaya ryapushka" or "Sibirskaya ryapushka", but it should not be confused with the "ryapushka".
