Antarctic Conservation Act

Antarctic Conservation Act

The Antarctic Conservation Act, enacted in 1978 by the 95th United States Congress (USPL|95|541), is a United States federal law that addresses the issue of environmental conservation on the continent of Antarctica. The Departments of the Treasury, Interior and Commerce are responsible for the Act's enforcement.

The Act can be found in usc|16|2401|2413.

Purpose

Until the 1960s, some species of whales and seals were on the way to extinction. Tourists littered everything. Fishing and whaling was uncontrolled an people had no idea if they were overfishing a species to their extinction or not. Therefore, the Antarctic Treaty was founded to protect the most extremest continent. Many new laws were enforced over Antarctica, mainly concerning plants and animals. They are now protected by the government and are only aloud to be caught for scientific reasons. People are not aloud to take animals, plants or even soil with them to Antartica because of the infections spreading and that wildlife can not cope with it. There are protected areas that not even scientists are aloud to go into. Sometimes, waste is thrown into the ocean as food for different kinds of birds.Other measures taken prevent pollution in and around Antarctica. Littering can can cause toxic substances to appear everywhere, so therefore it is forbidden. Mining is also prohibited. Tourists are big problems and so the Antarctic Treaty decided to only allow a certain number of tourists from every country to come to Antarctica. Tourists have to accept certain rules or they are not allowed to come to Antarctica.
