The first Secretary of the Treasury wasAlexander Hamilton , PresidentGeorge Washington asking Hamilton to serve after first having asked Robert Morris (who declined, recommending Hamilton instead). Hamilton almost single-handedly worked out the nation's early financial system, and for several years was a major presence in Washington's administration as well.The Department is administered by theUnited States Secretary of the Treasury and theTreasurer of the United States , who receives and keeps the money of the United States. The Department prints and mints allpaper currency and coins in circulation through theBureau of Engraving and Printing and theUnited States Mint . The United States Department of the Treasury enforces all existing US Laws of a financial nature. These include:
#Recommends and implements the economic, fiscal, and currency policies of the President as approved by
Congress .
#Oversees the established laws and regulation of exports and imports.
#Designs, prints, and mints all authorized mediums of exchange used by the US Government, including Currency, Coins, Stamps, and Bonds, as directed by theFederal Reserve .
#Oversees regulation of all financial institutions chartered by the United States, as approved by the President and Congress

Responsibilities
The basic functions of the Department of the Treasury include:
* Managing Federal finances;
* Collecting taxes, duties and monies paid to and due to the U.S. and paying all bills of the U.S.;
* Producing allpostage stamp s,currency and coinage;
* Managing Government accounts and theU.S. public debt ;
* Supervising nationalbank s andthrift institution s;
* Advising on domestic and international financial, monetary, economic, trade and tax policy -fiscal policy being the sum of these, and the ultimate responsibility of Congress.
* Enforcing Federal finance and tax laws;
* Investigating and prosecuting tax evaders, counterfeiters, forgers, smugglers, illicit spirits distillers, andgun law violators.With respect to the estimation of revenues for the executive branch, Treasury serves a purpose parallel to that of the Office of Management and Budget for the estimation of spending for the executive branch, the Joint Committee on Taxation for the estimation of revenues for Congress, and the
