Tithing (country subdivision)

The English land division called the tithing was one tenth of a hundred, or equal to ten (Scandinavian: ten = "ti", assembly = "thing" ) Allied to this concept was a local administrative unit also called a tithing, with essentially legal responsibilities, exercised by a "tithingman" or "headborough". They continued in use until modern times.Fact|date=June 2008
