- Truchas, New Mexico
Truchas is an unincorporated town in Rio Arriba County,
New Mexico ,United States . Located on the scenicTaos High Road (New Mexico State Highway 76 ), it is halfway between Santa Fe in the south and Taos to the north.Overview
Straddling a high ridge, the town began as a Spanish land grant in
1754 and, due to its geography and location, remained relatively unchanged outpost over the centuries. These very same issues made the town attractive to artists moving to Northern New Mexico for its thriving arts scene, particularly afterRobert Redford 's "The Milagro Beanfield War " (1988 ) was filmed there. Because the town had remained unchanged for so long, it still operates on some of the original Spanish land grant bylaws. For example, cars must share the roads with livestock. The town has excellent views of Truchas Peak (13,100 ft., the town is at 8400 ft.) and the Española Valley.
